Anticoagulant, Antiplatelet, and Fibrinolytic (Thrombolytic) Drugs

چکیده
Little intravascular coagulation of blood occurs in normal physiological conditions. Hemostasis involves the interplay of three procoagulant phases (vascular, platelet, and coagulation) that promote blood clotting to prevent blood loss (Fig. 22.1). The fibrinolytic system prevents propagation of clotting beyond the site of vascular injury and is involved in clot dissolution, or lysis (Fig. 22.2). HEMOSTATIC MECHANISMS

Hypercoagulability in dogs: treatment.
Hypercoagulability is a state in which the hemostatic balance shifts toward excessive platelet activation and fibrin deposition, leading to thrombosis. Although a definitive diagnosis is often difficult to make, identifying patients at risk for thromboembolism is critical. By identifying these patients and understanding mechanisms that contribute to hypercoagulability, clinicians can select pro...

This article about new anticoagulant drugs is part of the seventh American College of Chest Physicians Conference on Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Therapy: Evidence-Based Guidelines. The limitations of existing oral and parenteral anticoagulant agents have prompted a search for novel agents. Focusing on new anticoagulant drugs for the prevention and treatment of arterial and venous thrombosis...
متن کاملCerebral microbleeds: a new dilemma in stroke medicine
Cerebral microbleeds (CMBs) are an increasingly common neuroimaging finding in the context of ageing, cerebrovascular disease and dementia, with potentially important clinical relevance. Perhaps the most pressing clinical question is whether CMBs are associated with a clinically important increase in the risk of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH), the most feared complication in patients treated w...
متن کاملEvaluation and management of stroke.
In contrast to myocardial infarction, stroke is a heterogeneous disease with multiple different causes. Determination of stroke mechanism is critical to choosing optimal therapy to prevent recurrence. This article reviews the diagnostic approach to stroke and prognostic and treatment implications of specific stroke mechanisms. Data on the role of antiplatelet and anticoagulant therapy in second...
متن کاملCASE REPORT Massive Fatal Pulmonary Emboli with Fibrinolytic Therapy
IN 1-2% of patients with deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary emboli develop despite therapy with heparin.' Episodes of DVT successfully treated with anticoagulant therapy may still result in venous valvular incompetence and lead to postphlebitic syndromes characterized by ulceration, varicosities and edema. Studies of thrombolytic agents suggest that early use of these drugs for extensive ven...
